Maxima Ranoco (Aling Maxima) recalled the tragedy brought by Typhoon Yolanda in 2013 and how her family went through months dependent on relief goods. Since then, she vowed to herself that her family would never experience the same and go hungry again.
A member of the Sung-an Farmers Association of Mercedes, Eastern Samar, Aling Maxima was farmer-trainee of SM Foundation’s Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan (KSK) Farmers’ Training Program. She took pride in never missing a session of the 12-week training and diligently absorbed all the lessons.
A month after she completed the training, Aling Maxima borrowed a one hectare piece of land owned by their organization president where she shared the farming technologies she had learned from the KSK to her fellow farmers. Today, their cooperative group harvests sitaw and ampalaya which are sold in the local market.
While sharing her learnings to others, Aling Maxima continues to plant on her own backyard. She now harvests vegetables such as kundol, kamote, pakwan, patola and kalabasa.
“Simula ngayon, hinding hindi na magugutom ang pamilya ko!” Aling Maxima exclaims.
