“Looking back, I didn’t care about having much to spend for snacks or personal items. I kept going to school because I wanted to go to college and because my family had so many expectations of me.” – Joebert “JB” Palma.

At a very young age, JB had his share or experiences. His mother, the sole breadwinner of the family, works in their barangay to make ends meet. As the eldest, JB took it upon himself to help his mother raise and support the rest of his siblings.

Determined to provide a better life for his family, JB sent in his application to the SM College Scholarship Program.

One fateful day, he received the phone call which marked the start of his journey towards a brighter future. Now an SM Scholar, JB is grateful that on top of his tuition, he also receives support for his miscellaneous educational expenses as well as a monthly allowance.

“SM Foundation spends so much for me, so to give back, I study hard to get good grades,” shared JB, hopeful that he will be graduating with honors. His mother is overjoyed for her son who once didn’t even have enough money for his “baon”. Her joy is mixed with sadness as she feels that JB may be the only one among his sibling who will be able to go to college. JB remains positive and aims to takes it upon himself to support his siblings’ education after he secures a job.

JB added, “I used to be a dreamer who imagines a good life and a fruitful career from the shadows. But now, I am a doer of the things that I used to just dream of.”

Today, JB is in his fourth year at the Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in General Santos. He will be graduating this year on March with a degree in Secondary Education, major in Biological Sciences. After graduation, JB aims to be a science teacher and help his mother financially and send his siblings to school. And when all is done, he hopes to pursue a master’s degree and eventually write a book about his life.

SM Foundation helps thousands of dreamers like JB to live out their dream and achieve a promising future.
