“I surrendered myself as long as I can serve”

Dra. Lyn Cequena, a Medical Specialist and a Senior House Officer in Mandaluyong City Medical Center, has been a regular volunteer in many SM Foundation Medical Missions over the years.

Her mission to help indigent patients started when her doctor-friend invited her to one of SM Foundation’s Medical Missions. Since then, she has regularly joined those which are conducted within Metro Manila and the nearby provinces. With the joy she felt after every mission, she eventually made herself available even in remote areas hit by typhoons.

“I surrendered myself as long as I can serve,” shared Dra. Lyn.

To the doctor who gives hope to others, life seemed to have presented the most ironic

challenge. In 2011, the good doctor faced her own storm when she was diagnosed with a Stage I Breast Cancer. As a single parent to a 5 year old boy, her heart’s prayer was for the Almighty to lend her the longest life possible.

“I accepted the fact that I had the illness, but this did not stop me from serving the less fortunate Filipinos through SM Foundation’s Medical Missions. This became one of my missions,” Dra. Lyn declared.

The strong bond that developed among the regular volunteers, patients, and the SM Foundation Medical Missions team encouraged Dra. Lyn to continue volunteering her services to the missions. Currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, Dra. Lyn shared that her healing does not rely solely on medications but also in the fulfillment of being part of SM Foundation’s Medical Mission brings to her.

“I believe that God is allowing me to live for He is showing His graces and blessings through me by making me an instrument of His healing hands,” Dra. Lyn confided. “By doing so, I feel the power of healing in me by helping others heal.”
