For any municipality, the local health center serves as the main provider of medical services for the community. These services become indispensable especially for those who cannot afford them. In support of this initiative, SM Foundation refurbishes and upgrades medical facilities under its Felicidad T. Sy Wellness Program, one of these being the Los Banos Health Center in Laguna.
Renamed to a Felicidad T. Sy Wellness Center, the facility was refurbished and upgraded to provide better medical services to the community. The uniquely designed multi-center now features various activity areas which help the doctors offer new services for children and women’s health. There is now a room allotted for cervical cancer screening using cryotherapy and a social hygiene clinic for venereal disease infections while the play area is now used for behavioral therapy for children with special needs.
From an average of only 40 – 45 patients a day, the upgraded facility now serves about a hundred patients per day, excluding the cases that need special services.
Dr. Alvin Isidoro who serves as the Municipal Health Officer of Los Banos has noted the impact of the upgraded facilities to the community. “It’s not the usual public clinic, it’s beautiful and spacious. Mere perception contributes to the well-being and can hasten healing,” he said, adding that the attitude of the staff has also improved.
“Before they were content with giving the usual services, but now they are more open to innovation,” Dr. Isidoro added.
Through Dr. Isidoro’s innovations, the upgraded facility is now an area for “Lakbay-Aral” for health workers where barangay health workers are trained to provide quality service to the community. The center also serves as host to support SM Foundation medical missions in the area, of which Dr. Isidoro also serves as a volunteer-doctor. His passion to provide holistic healthcare inspires many health workers and doctors as well to continually innovate and dream.
