SM Foundation and ADZU: Partnering to develop future leaders
SM Scholars from Mindanao unite to strengthen their network, cultivate a balanced student life, connect with peers, foster lasting relationships, and share knowledge and support with one another.
“Whether they’re leading student organizations, volunteering in outreach programs, or celebrating Zamboanga’s rich cultural diversity, these scholars embody the Ignatian ideal of cura personalis—care for the whole person.”
Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) President Guillrey Anthony Andal, SJ, said in an interview about the SM Scholars studying at the university.
ADZU, and various universities around the Philippines, have been SM Foundation’s partner in opening educational opportunities for deserving students from vulnerable communities.
So far, SM Foundation’s collaboration with ADZU has supported seven graduates and currently provides scholarships to seven students. By easing the financial burdens of education, the program allows scholars to focus on academics and personal development.
SM Foundation scholarships cover tuition fees, miscellaneous expenses, and allowances. Beyond financial support, the program helps students excel academically, develop life skills, and engage in leadership roles.
Scholars also gain work experience during breaks, with opportunities for part-time jobs at SM malls. These roles help them develop teamwork, time management, and adaptability, preparing them for future challenges.
“For scholars in Zamboanga, where resilience and strong relationships are part of everyday life, these experiences prepare them to lead and serve in diverse contexts. With every opportunity, they’re learning how to be persons for and with others, even in the small, ordinary ways,” Andal said.
“They’re not just succeeding for themselves; they’re learning how to use their gifts to serve others and make a difference,” he added.
According to him, the SM scholars in ADZU, stand out as examples of Ignatian education in action: “They show that being well-rounded isn’t just an ideal; it’s a way of life. They excel in academics while also participating in student councils, cultural festivals, and community programs. This balance of excellence and engagement reflects the Ignatian call to live a life of magis—always striving to be more, not for personal gain, but for the greater good.”
Success of SM Scholars in ADZU
Eighteen-year-old Earl Brian Roble is currently studying BS Accountancy at ADZU under the SM Scholarship program. Coming from a family reliant on a single income, the scholarship was a turning point for him.

“Without the scholarship, it would have been difficult for me to attend Ateneo. The financial support covers tuition and allowances, letting me focus on my studies,” Brian shared.
Brian chose ADZU for its Jesuit education: “I wanted to experience the so-called holistic education in Ateneo. Not just an education for the academic and intellectual nourishment, but an education that also nourishes the soul. Moreover, I see that the Ateneo has the best and top-performing Accountancy program in Region IX.” He added that ADZU’s top Accountancy program made his choice easier.
For Edlene Marielle Toribio, an 18-year-old BS Accountancy freshman, studying at ADZU was a dream she thought was out of reach. Financial constraints almost led her elsewhere, but the SM scholarship changed everything.

“The scholarship has lifted the financial burden off my family, allowing me to study at my dream school,” Edlene said. She credits ADZU for helping her unlock her potential and offering an education that prepares her for success.
Building a better future
The SM Foundation scholarship program not only provides education but also prepares scholars to become leaders in their communities. With its focus on academics, leadership, and service, the program develops well-rounded individuals ready to make a difference.
As ADZU President Andal put it, “At ADZU, we’re not just educating minds; we’re forming hearts and hands ready to serve.”
