In tough times, here’s how you can #SpreadSocialGood

Employee-volunteers from SM City San Lazaro lead the distribution of Kalinga Packs to families affected by monsoon rains and Typhoon Crising in their host community.

We might not know it, but it’s the little things that make a big difference during the toughest of times.

If you’re eager to support your community but are not sure how to begin, start here. These simple, meaningful ideas can help you make a real difference.

1. Spread compassion, not panic, on social media

Social media is a powerful tool, especially during critical times. With disinformation plaguing our social media, the best thing to do during calamities is to amplify helpful, verified information.

Use your social media platforms to amplify verified calls for help. Offer hope and be sensitive about the plight of others.

2. Only share verified information

Help combat misinformation by only sharing information from verified accounts of government units and first responders. Ensure you are sharing news from trusted sources. A single accurate update can guide people to safety or resources.

3. Support and cooperate with emergency responders

Time is of the essence when we’re facing calamities. Stay alert and follow safety measures, especially when flooding occurs in your area.

4. Donate with heart and purpose

Whether clothes, food, or other essentials, always check what’s truly needed by victims.

When making a monetary donation, ensure that you channel it through reputable organizations that can guarantee your support reaches the people who need it most. To support you in spreading social good, SM Supermalls has dedicated areas within your nearest SM Malls where you can drop off in-kind or monetary support.

5. Be there emotionally

A simple “Hey! How are you holding up?” can mean everything. Slide through their DMs, send a voice note, or drop a quick text. Whether it’s a friend, classmate, or coworker, checking in and really listening can make someone feel seen.

6. Join local volunteer efforts

There’s always a way to pitch in in times like this–whether it's packing relief goods, helping in evacuation centers, or lending your professional skills (like medical, logistical support, or creating publication materials for awareness)

Employees of SM City Olongapo dedicate time of their day to join the distribution of Kalinga Packs to families affected by the monsoon rains and Typhoon Crising.

7. Look out for the fur babies, too!

Aside from us humans, stray animals get hit hard during disasters, too. If you see a lost or injured pet, reach out to a local rescue or shelter as soon as it’s clear to do so. If you’re able, leave out water and food in secure spots where animals can access them without risk. And if you’ve got the space (and the heart), consider fostering. Being someone’s temporary hooman can literally save a life.

8. Support local businesses affected by the disaster

After the immediate crisis, recovery takes time. Buying from our local farmers or promoting local businesses hit by the disaster is a simple way of spreading social good. When visiting an SM Supermall, drop by the stalls of MSMEs or get your greens from your local Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan farmers.

9. Practice preparedness and help others do the same

The best time to prepare is now. Next time you’re at the mall or doing a grocery run, take a moment to stock up on emergency essentials such as non-perishable food, batteries, flashlights, and other must-haves for your go-bag.

A simple way to spread social good is to snap a photo of your go-bag and encourage others to prep theirs, too!

And when your school, workplace, or neighborhood holds a disaster drill, don’t just go through the motions. Take it seriously, as those dry runs could save lives one day.

SM Foundation and its social good partners equipped flood-prone areas across the country, enabling local health centers to respond more quickly and effectively during emergencies.
