Creating a Brighter Future Through Learning Spaces

Cassandra (left), alongside a fellow student and their teacher, represents how education and mentorship create a nurturing space where young learners can grow, dream, and thrive.

Imagine a building that does more than provide space for students - it becomes a wellspring of motivation.

The newly turned-over two-story building by the SM Foundation at Magtaking Elementary School in San Carlos City, Pangasinan, isn't just a structure for grade 5 student Cassandra, but a shift in perspective.

Ang building na ito ay nagbigay ng pag-asa na mas may iga-ganda pa ang kalidad ng edukasyon na naranasan ko,” Cassandra shares.

With modern classrooms doing more than providing space, the student body believes that they shape mindsets and empower learners to envision a brighter, more digital-ready future.

Principal Christopher G. Macasias guides a student during class, reflecting his belief that quality learning is achieved when effective teaching meets conducive learning environments.

School principal Christopher Macasias believes that true "quality learning" is a three-part equation. He says that the standard for Philippine education can only be raised when quality classrooms are matched with quality teachers to produce quality results.

Hindi lang ito silid-aralan kundi isa itong lugar upang mabigyan ng katuparan ang paghubog ng kanilang mga kinabukasan,” Macasias explains.

He notes that while "fast learners" may adapt to any environment, achieving quality for average and slow learners requires better ratios and conducive spaces. By moving away from overcrowded rooms of 40 to 50 students toward more manageable, well-ventilated spaces, the school can finally focus on individualized, high-impact instruction.

The school faced steep uphill battles before the recent transformation. Poor ventilation made summer lessons a test of endurance rather than intellect, and a lack of hardware left many students behind in a rapidly digitizing world.

Guided by their teacher, students walk through the new building, now home to the DigiHub, providing access to quality education and technology.

The new building includes a DigiHub, a digital center equipped with computers and internet access. For long-time teacher Willy Cayabyab, this is the "blessing" the school needed to keep up with the “kalidad ng edukasyon ngayon.

“It is a huge help,” Cayabyab says. “The facility allows us to implement modern education better.” With the DigiHub, learners who lack devices at home can now develop ICT skills and conduct research, ensuring they are not left behind in the global digital economy.

The functional design of the new building supports high-quality instruction, ensuring students are well-prepared to meet the demands of an evolving global landscape.

Connecting quality education to future dreams: A modern classroom setting inspires a new generation of students to aim for excellence and commit to elevating education for all.

The new building has reached a functional stage, delivering high-quality instruction and encouraging teacher collaboration. It also serves as a "bridge from dreams to reality," as Principal Macasias puts it.

It addresses the learning crisis by strengthening the foundation of the future workforce.

For students like Cassandra, the goal is no longer just to finish school, but to excel. Inspired by her new environment, she now dreams of studying hard so that she, too, can one day help improve the quality of education across the Philippines.
