Mark Anthony Teodoro believed that being poor did not stand in the way of achieving great things.

Born to a simple family, Mark knew that he needed to complete his education for him reach his dreams. Mark’s father makes a living by doing manual labor work while his mother was simple homemaker. Both struggled to make ends meet for the family’s expenses.

“We actually found out about SM Foundation from our cousin. We looked to different kinds of scholarships, including the Department of Science and Technology Scholarship,” Mark said. “When we found out from our relatives that I passed the SM Foundation Scholarship application, I chose to take up Electrical Engineering at Far Eastern University-East Asia College.”

“I was really excited and at the same time really scared because I knew that I had to really do my best,” he added.

During college, Mark and his family continued to face challenges. Right when Mark thought things couldn’t get worse, they hit rock bottom when his father had a hard time at work because of his age. Despite being blessed as an SM College Scholar, the fact remained that his parents still had his siblings to support and bills to pay. At that time, Mark was already considering quitting school to find work to help support his family. But to Mark’s surprise, his relatives stepped in and helped them financially.

“Because of this, I made a promise to myself to be the best at what I do, to not waste time, and to excel at everything I sought out to do,” declared Mark.

To Mark, poverty was no hindrance in achieving success—it only meant that he had to work harder. After graduating cum laude, Mark joined the Far Eastern University Institute of Technology as a full time faculty member. Upon receiving his first pay check, Mark proudly told his father that he will be the one who’ll take over the responsibilities of providing for the family from then on.

Now a teacher, Mark makes it a point to encourage his students to believe in themselves and to dream higher. He cannot emphasize enough the importance of integrity.

“If you keep on going with life and not give up, there will come a time where in just a single moment, your life will change for the better,” shared Mark.
