SM Foundation turns over school in Capiz

SM Prime Holdings, BDO Foundation and SM Foundation teamed up to reconstruct the Lantangan Elementary School in Barangay in Pontevedra, Capiz.

The 2-storey, 4-classroom building was turned over on December 15, 2014 and comes with four toilets, 200 student armchairs, 16 wall fans, eight blackboards and four teachers’ desk sets. In addition to these, SM Foundation will also be handling the building’s maintenance and upkeep.

Capiz was badly hit by Typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in 2013, devastating 95% of its agriculture, infrastructure and livelihood. The typhoon completely leveled three of Lantangan Elementary School’s 12 classrooms.

For school year 2013-2014, classes for 415 students were held in the school’s partially damaged classrooms.

“SM Foundation looks forward to turning over more school buildings in the following months. A year after Yolanda, SM Foundation remains constant in helping in the country’s rehabilitation efforts.”

Present during the turnover were Office of the Presidential Assistant for Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR) Capiz Provincial Coordinator, Roxie Abagatnan; Department of Education School Division Superintendent, Miguel Mac Aposin; Pontevedra, Capiz Municipal Mayor, Esteban Jose Contreras; BDO Foundation President, Maureen Abelardo; BDO Roxas Avenue Branch Manager, Genesis Ambrocio; and SM Foundation Executive Director for Education, Linda Atayde.

To date, SM Foundation has already donated 62 school buildings with 164 classrooms and repaired 18 school buildings with 42 classrooms, nationwide.
